Scourge Of The Drow

Travels through the dark
Brilliance and Madness

We find a location to rest, and settle in. During Tak and Stool’s watches a few drow slip

into the small chamber we’re resting in. They are as surprised to find us here as Tak is

to see them.

Two drow fire their hand crossbows at Tak, the other two fire at Stool, but they

ALL miss. Tak tells Stool to wake the others, then moves to the closest two drow. Drawing

his sword as he goes, and slashes one leaving a bleeding wound.
Angus wakes grabs his hand crossbow, sits up, fires at one of the drow but misses.

Eldeth wakes grabs her shortsword and stumbles towards the drow waiting for one to close.

The drow Tak slashed dropped its hand crossbow, draws his sword and cut him too. The other

three fire hand crossbows again and continue to miss. Tak stumbles and misses the drow.

Stool wakes Shar and Jimjar.
Shar stands, moves forward drawing her sword. Angus closes with the drow oposite

Tak striking with both hands. Eldeth closes with another drow. One of them fires his hand

crossbow at Angus hitting him point blank. Another fires at Eldeth missing, the next drops

his hand crossbow and slashes Eldeth. Tak and his drow block and parry each others

attacks. He tells the drow, "you don’t need to die here, there is a place for you in the

moonlit lands above, throw down your weapons."
Shar flanks the drow Tak was fighting and cuts him down, she moves to the next in

line and slashes him too. Angus pummels the drow he is fighting. Eldeth stabs her drow.

Jimjar joins the fray stabbing another drow, slaying it. The drow fighting Angus

disengages and starst to flee. The last one steps over to Angus and slashes him, leaving

him bleeding badly. Tak casts Command on the fleeing drow, ordering him to “STOP!” then

moves over to Angus. Shuushar picks up Stool and backs to the wall, waiting safely behind

Shar draws her short sword, moves to the drow attacking Angus and cuts him down as

she chases the pursuing drow. Angus runs down the fleeing drow, landing punishing blows.

The drow calls out to Ilvara as he falls. We are not happy to hear her name again. Tak

casts Cure Wounds on Angus, and lays hands on Eldeth to deal with our worst wounds.

We loot the drow;
4 hand crossbows, 30 drow sleep bolts (DC 13 Con poisoned for 1 hours, if failed by 5, is

also asleep), 2 pouches with pots of drow sleep poison (5 doses each). Angus, Shar, and

Tak each take 10 bolts, Angus and Tak take the pots. 4 short swords, 4 chain shirts.

We drag the drow bodies back the way they came. Angus and Tak hear movement further along

the tunnel. We sneak back to camp (Tak is not sneaky). We gather the others and sneak away

from the intersection, Shuushar covers our tracks. We find a dead end to finish our rest.

We travel for another day without incidents. Tak finding food and water to sustain us. The

next day Shar nimbly steps aside as a steam vent erupts beneath her. Soon after we see

light ahead. We usher Shuushar and Stool into a cravase. We see three small creatures

aproaching. They call out a well met, claiming to be traders.

We do some more trading they tell us we are 21 days away from Blingdenstone if we cross

the gorge. We sell the chain shirts, short swords, and hand crossbows (Each party member

gets 11g). Angus buys a backpack and some cloth.

Another day later while traversing a long twisting cavern a tremor dislodges rocks which

fall from above. Angus, Tak, Shuushar, are all knocked down and nearly killed by the rock

fall. Shar rushes from one to the other feeding them healing potions. Ralizing the danger

they are in of more rock falls Tak uses all of his healing powers to get himself Angus,

and Shuushar back on their feet. We continue on picking our way carefully through the

rubble. Later we see a solitary traveler. Tak calls a quite “well met.” A moon elf with a

slave collar steps into the dim light. Tak asks if he’d like one of us to remove the

collar. He is very exited at the posibility saying it is how they are tracking him. Shar

reaches out and tears the collar off his neck. He introduces himself as Erden, a farmer near Baldur’s Gate that was held captive by duergar. Tak gives him a spear to defend himself and asks him to stay with Shuushar and Stool if a fight breaks out. We continue to travel using rations to make up for anything Tak, JImjar, and Shuushar can’t gather.

The next day we continue to make our way towards the gorge. The rocky walls come alive! Tentacles reach out towards us! Gricks attack with tentacles and beaks from both sides of the tunnel. They wound Tak and Jimjar, again we are fighting for our lives!

Eldeth sees the walls come alive and stabs the closest grick. Tak notices it resisting the sword blow, and warns the others. He draws his sword and misses. Shar slashes wildly at another and misses. Angus fires a poison bolt at one of the grick hitting it. Jimjar attacked and missed. Erden, Shuushar, and Stool back away to safety. The grick attack with flailing tentacles and clacking beaks, Shar is struck, and Jimjar is knocked unconsious.
Eldeth attacks the poisoned grick but misses. Tak calls on Eilistraee and divine strikes the grick, hurting it. Shar slashes the grick on her side of the tunnel. Angus moves forward and attacks with a flurry of blows. The grick continue attacking, Angus is wounded, Jimjar is knocked down.
Eldeth finishes off the single grick, them turns to attack the one oposite it. Tak steps across the hall to aid Angus. Shar slashes the front grick again. Angus punches the back one. Jimjar lies bleeding. Shuushar moves forward and attends to his wounds stabilizing him.
Eldeth and Tak continue to fight but are just holding their own. Shar slashes a tentacle completely off the front grick, it bleeds out and dies twitching. Angus punches the grick again. The remaining grick flails at Tak but his armor and shield turn the blows.
Eldeth waits for an opening. Tak slashes another rubbery tentacle. Shar pauses to catch her breath. Angus bashes the grick again.
Eldeth continues to wait. Tak misses the thrashing beast. Shar thrusts her long sword into it and it dies too.

Now that the fight is over Tak goes to tend to Jimjar with a cure wounds spell, waking him up. He lays hands on Shar and Angus. Angus searches the crevases the grick were hidden in. He finds a staff shaped like a stylized serpent. We move a short ways away and take a short rest while Tak studies the staff.

It is a Staff of the Python usable by a Cleric, Druid, or Warlock. Angus holds onto it. Perhaps we can trade it for some thing of use.

Charlie gives us 388exp for a total of 1,250. Ding 3rd level!

We continue on our way, the rest of that day as well as the next without significant events. We come upon a long narrow chamber that bends off to the right. The muck and mud is 3 feet deep in places which will make for slow going. As we come around the bend another small figure aproaches through the muck. Just its head above the surface. Tak calls out “well met muddy traveler.” The figure who is now noticibly a duergar grumpily tells us to get out of his way, he’s on an important mission. We shuffle out of his way, as he passes Angus and some of the others see the by now familiar light of madness in his eyes. We let him pass on his way. We rest after we struggle out of the mud.

The next day (day 8 AD, After Demagorgon) passes without incident. When we look for a place to rest we come upon a dwarven ruin in an area of faerzress. We find we can secure one of the 8 rooms and hold up for a long rest. Angus finds a receipt. It is written in common for 18g in goods and services (a sack of rations, and mess kit) from Aurora’s (Whole realms emporium). Angus investigates the ruin while Tak stands guard, he determines it is a well used resting place.

During day 9 we come across a passage blocked by webs. It looks like they go on for 100’. Jimjar and Tak discuss detours and decide they would take to long. We think the webs will cut our travels in half today. Angus rigs up a torch using Tak’s short sword, some of the gaudy cloth he bought, and webbing. He leads the way burning webbing. The smoke is acrid and unpleasant. Angus sees a strugling form in the webbing ahead. As he gets closer he recognizes it as an Orog. It calls out, “say there, I seem to have become stuck, could you help me out.” He tells us he is investigating faerzress and a demonic incursion. He introduces himself as Blurg and tells us he’s a member of the Society of Brilliance (highly intelligent monsters). We tell him about the faerzress at the dwarf ruins, and the destruction of Sloobludop at the tentacles of Demagorgon. He tells us he’s looking to meet friends in the Society; a Derro, Mind Flayer, Kua-toa etc. He asks us to tell the others that he’s going to the dwarf ruin if we come across them. We discuss the fact that the bouts of madness may be related to the faerzress and incursion. He goes on his way. We burn and slash our way past the webbing. Later we take another long rest.

During day 10 we come upon a cavern full of fungi. Stool perks up here. We have a meal of mushrooms. Tak, Jimjar, and Shuushar stock us up on some that travel ok. We steer clear of and warns the others about dangerous mushrooms. And they look for some exotic types as well.

Tak finds a Tongue of Madness fungue. It looks somewhat like a large human tongue. A creature that eats it must make a DC12 Con save or compulsively speak its every though out loud for the next hour.

We camp here for the night, finding a barrel fungus that provides food and water.

On day 11 we hear shreiking and incoherent moans echoing through the passages. We can’t tell where they come from. We try to ignore it, but it carries on for over an hour. Jimjar cries out, “The shriking, the voices, I can’t take it.” He turns and attacks Shar, cutting her.

Angus fires his hand crossbow and misses. Shar slaps him with the flat of her sword. Eldeth also tries to knock Jimjar out, but misses. Jimjar attacks Shar again telling her to stop making that noise! Tak throws his net over Jimjar restraining him!
Angus shoots again poisoning him, but Jimjar does not fall asleep. Shar swats him again. He collapses in a heap.

Tak gathers up his net, and picks up Jimjar carrying him as we continue on. The shrieking stops a couple hours later. Jimjar wakes later with a headache and doesn’t remember the fight. Tak fills him in, and lets him carry his own weight.

We wrap for the night.

Fishy family feud.
Demigorgon breaks the surface.

A carrion crawler shoves its way into the midst of our march striking at Shuushar, and Angus with tentacles. Angus shrugs off the beginnings of paralysis, and Shuushar is bitten.
The carrion crawler lashes out at Shuushar again and the Kuo-toa falls. Shar turns to attack it with her shortsword. Stool withdraws from the carrion crawler moving behind Eldeth. Angus calls upon Lathandar and pummels crawler with a flurry of blows. Eldath stabilizes Shuushar. Jimjar can’t reach the beast, and does not have anything to throw. Tak steps forward and slashes the carrion crawler.
The carrion crawler lashes Tak and Shar, paralyzing Tak. Shar slashes it again and mucus sprays from the thrashing beast. Angus swings away and the carrion crawler falls before his right and left fists.

A few moments later Tak shakes off his paralysis. As Angus is tending to Shuushar’s wounds Tak casts Cure Wounds restoring his health. Angus notices a recess in the wall above us that the carrion crawler fall upon us from. He looks at the wall as though to climb it. Tak offers his hand and thanks him for his aid, when Angus grasps his hand Tak lays hands on him. Then Angus climbs up to the recess and finds the corpses of two drow. While he does Tak lays hands on Shar healing her wounds too.

Loot from drow bodies:
Two backpacks [Angus & Tak], chainmail [Tak], studded leather, two sets of clothes [Shar & Tak], short sword, long sword [Shar], dagger, shield, hand crossbow w/ 16 bolts, 6 potions (Healing 2d4+2) [1 each], pouch w/ 161 gold (Mantol Darith coins / 23g each) [Eldeth carries], Clerical holy symbol (Eilistraee) [Tak].

Angus returns to the rest of the group, we hand the new gear out. Any thing not claimed is put in the two backpacks carried by Angus and Tak.

We come upon a small chamber with three passages and rest there for the night. On Tak’s watch he hears noise in one of the tunnels. He sneaks (I know right!) over to the entrance and hears footsteps. They are not being sneaky. He telepathically asks Stool to wake the others, who does so telepathically. Five duergar walk around a turn and Tak welcomes them into the camp. It turns out they are merchants and we do some trade. They continue on down the tunnel the way we came. The rest of the morning passes without trouble.

When we are ready to head out Shuushar tells us some thing is wrong with Stool. Angus examines him and tells us he appears to be stunned. Taknafein takes a close look about the chamber and out the other two tunnels. Finding nothing he suggests Jimjar lead the way, and Shuushar carries Stool. A while later Stool recovers and is confused, it does not know what happened. Angus thinks he sees madness in its eyes. We discuss the increase in cases of madness of late. We travel through the dimly lit winding tunnels. As our tunnel comes to a chamber whith four entrances we come uppon a group of kua-toa. They are blocking the tunnel we want, the path to Slubludup. Tak asks Shuushar to parley with them for us. As he reaches the front of the group the other party attacks!

Angus throws his makeshift fire bomb between us and the kua-toa shedding light on them. Jimjar grips his shortsword and prepares to fight the kua-toa. All but one of them rush across the chamber swinging nets and blocking the tunnel ahead of us. Shuushar retreats back to Eldeth and Stool. Shar moves forward attacking with long and short swords, her opponent looks wobbly. Eldeth moves forward and strikes another kua-toa. Stool cheers us on telepathically and wierdly. Tak moves forwards and casts bless on Angus, Shar, and himself.
Angus moves forward and fires his hand crossbow at the one in the back. Jimjar joins the fray. The kua-toa cast their nets! Shar and Jimjar are restrained by nets. (Str or Wpn dmg to break free). Shar cuts her way free. Eldeth finishes off the kua-toa she was fighting. Tak steps in front of Jimjar, in the midst of the kua-toa and finishes off the one fighting Shar.
Angus drops his handcrossbow moves into the meele and uses Ki to make a flurry of blows slashing it twice with shortsword, and then kicks, felling it. Jimjar frees himself from his net. The remaining kua-toa move forward with spear and nets. Tak is stabbed. Shar slashes a kua-toa. Eldeth follows Angus forward and slashes the kua-toa in front of Tak. He finishes off that wounded one freeing up Angus to move.
Angus circles the fire and attacks the rear kua-toa with hand and foot laying him out. Jimjar continues to attack. The last four call our to the Deep Father (an evil kua-toa deity) and disengage. Shar follows cutting one down. Eldeth also pursues and attacks. Tak joins the pursuit wounding another.
Angus strikes a fresh one wounding it. Jimjar waves as they flee. The kua-toa continue to disengage. Shar continues her pusuit finishing off the slower one. Eldeth cuts down the one fleeing her. Tak can’t reach the last kua-toa, drops his sword, draws and fires his hand crossbow, but alas he misses.
Angus rushes forward and attacks missing. The last one flees into the darkness.

Kua-toa loot:
Half a dozen spears & nets, ragged clothes.
The leader had better clothes, a tunic, bone teeth & sharks tooth necklaces.

No one was wounded badly but we take a rest. We hear a dying scream down the tunnel to Sloobludop. A short while later half a dozen more kua-toa arive. These wear better clothes, two elaborately so. Their leader Pluplupeen is not concerned that the previous band was slain. He casts a spell so we can all understand and tells us that with the Sea Mother’s blessings if we help them we will be rewarded. Tak offers to help as Eilistraee preaches peace among the races. His daughter has sworn to the Deep Father and is making blood sacrifices. Tossing chum into the Dark Lake where some thing eats it.

He tells us that the Deep Father’s group tried to capture us to be sacrifices. He would like us to pose as those sacrifices, but instead of being unarmed we would be presented to the high priestess with our weapons. There to create a diversion so the followers of the Sea Mother can cut the head off their opposition. He seems sincere. He and his entorage escort us to Sloobludop. The guards let us pass. He leads us to the shrine of the Sea Mother. A rather fishy combination of giant crustacians.

Angus tells us that regurgitation is considered an earnest offering. Considering the smell several of us including Tak don’t have any difficulty throwing up our lunch. Then Pluplupeen leads us to his quarters. His son loudly states outsiders should not be involved in their holy maters. We rest for a while (short rest) and discuss what to do if things go sideways. Tak suggests we make for a boat protecting Shuushar and Jimjar as they can steer the thing.

After our rest Pluplupeen escorts us to the altar of the Deep Father. As the archpriest joins the others. He offers us to her as a peace offering and sacrifice. She accepts and the crowd of kua-toa cheer, dancing and chanting. We quickly lose track of which group is which. We are hearded to a slight depression for the sacrifice. Pluplupeen attacks his daughter, which is our signal to attack!

Angus waits for Tak to cast bless, or a kua-toa to attack. Eldeth moves to a guard and attacks. Shar moves to the closest guard and slashes it twice. Tak casts Bless on Angus, Shar, and himself again. Moves into the melee, telling Stool and Shuushar to head for shore. Angus attacks his guard. Jimjar attacks another guard missing.
Angus finishes off his guard then moves to help Jimjar. Eldeth finishes off her guard. Shar finishes off a guard and moves on to another also wounding it. Tak finishes off that one and moves to engage two others. They stab at him with their spears, and he looses concentration on his Bless. Shar, Jimjar, and Angus are all missed. Jimjar continues to hold the guards spear at bay. Stool and Shuushar see the waters at the shore roiling, kua-toa in the shallows are being pulled under and froths of blood are on the waves.
Angus spear hands a guard. Eldeth moves to help Jimjar cutting down that guard. Tak swings and misses. The remaining kua-toa attack. As the high priestess falls before her fathers attacks she calls our to the Deep Father. A thick oily tentacle breaks the surface of the water. Two heads with red glowing eyes follow it, rising above the waters to its 30 foot height. Half the kua-toa are changing Lemugugon in worship of it. Angus recognize it as Demigorgon! It starts towards the shore.

We waste a couple of moments yelling about going North or South. Yelling to flee the wathers we head past the altars and head for the South gate. As we turn away we see Demigorgon reach the shore and begin lashing at the town with its tentacles killing end destroying every thing in reach!

Stool telepathically babbles incoherently. Shuushar flees in terror from Demigorgon. Eldeth stops in the street screaming that we are all going to die. Angus turns and knocks her out, carrying her away. Tak brings up the rear yelling, “faster you fools!” We open the gate and flee Sloobludop, with the screams of dying kuap-toa and crash of towers receding behind us.

When the caves and cavers are quiet around us again we discuss where to go next. Tak considers waiting out the demon and going back to the town to see if a boat survived the wreckage. Jimjar says he wouldn’t risk traveling over the Dark Lake now. So we discuss going East or West to get to around the lake. We decide to risk passing Menzoberanzan because it cuts four tendays off our journey to Blingdenstone.

We wrap for the night.

The escape!
Down the waterfall!

Our captors include a cruel drow Ilvara of House Mizzrym. We have met her several times,

flanked by two male drow. One with scars on the left side of his body. She uses a scourge

and exhorts us to except our fate.

We are fed a thin mushroom broth once a day, the small bowls passed through the gaps in

the heavy iron gate keeping us in our cave. Clay chamber pots are emptied into a pool once

a day. On top of all this we sleep fitfully. Nightmares of shadows, tentacles, screams,

supperating wounds, and other horrors wake us in the night. Taknafein is shaken from his

trances with night sweats.

Taknafein learns that there are about 19 drow in the outpost, a dozen quaggoth, and a few

giant spider. Three drow guards typically watch the cell we are in. We don’t think they

can see the rear of the cell, or hear us from there. Spells don’t function in the cell.

One of the guards Jorlan has fallen from Ilvara’s favor since becoming disfigured and

Shoor has replaced him in her esteem. We’ve heard the guards discussing a contingent

coming to take us to Menzoberanzan in a few days or perhaps a week (tenday). Another

rumor has a supply delivery running late which is unusual.

The next “day” Shar, Stool, Sarith, and Jimjar are tasked with dishes and laundry. Angus, Tak, Turvy and Derendil are tasked with emptying chamber pots. Each group is guarded by

one drow and four quaggoth. Angus has started surreptitiously gathering supplies to make a

fire bomb. Taknafein is looking for his holy symbol, a locked heavy wooden cabinet in

Ilvara’s chambers looks promising. After our tasks are finished they return us to our

cell, later we have the same thin mushroom soup.

The next day Tak, Shar, Jimjar, and Ront have chamber pot detail followed by cooking.

Angus, Shuushar, Sarith, Derendil, work loading and unloading the lift. Today Angus

gathers some grease to add to his flammables. Which he has been collecting in one of the

lamps. He also greases the inside of his manacles. The soup tastes a bit better today.

Angus and Shar aproach Tak and ask for his assistance escaping.

Jorlan is delivering soup today. He grumbles about his loss of station and asks Tak if he

would take an opportunity to escape. Tak says he will but is loath to do so without the

symbol of his goddess. Jorlan leaves and returns with Tak’s holy symbol. He leaves the cell

unlocked and tells Tak he will create a distraction. Tak warns the others to get ready.

Jimjar begins unshacking the others, and when possible their collars.

About an hour later we hear sounds of a fight coming from the Northern guard post. We wait

a few minutes and two of the drow guards leave the guard tower and head towards the fight.

After they pass we hurry across the bridge to find the guard tower empty. Angus, Tak, and

Shar climb up to the armory and grab weapons and armor. Tak gets Chain Shirt, shield,

short sword, hand crossbow & case of bolts, silk rope (100’). We spend nearly ten minutes

grabbing equipment, some of the others have already slipped away. We hear alarms and see

the quaggoth guards leave their barracks and head towards the open cell.

Shar rushes across the bridge and dives gracefully into the waterfall. She rides

it down into the deep pool below. Jorlan fires a hand crossbow at Angus hitting him. A

guard fires a hand crossbow at Tak, two other guards rush across the bridge and attack him

as he guards the door. He is struck by a short sword and falls to the floor. Angus rushes

back into the guard tower and shoots a drow guard at the door.

Shar breaks the surface of the pool, notices a grey ooze in the water, yells a

warning to the others, and swims for shore. Several of the others splash into the pool

behind her, she helps them out as they reach shore. Ront attacks a guard cutting them

down. Stool trundles through the room. Jorlan moves forward with the other guards

attacking Angus and Ront. Angus punches a guard in the crotch and he falls.
Shar continues to help the others, as more escapees splash into the pool. The

other escapees assist her. Ront punches the remaining guard again as Angus faces Jorlun.

A few moments (rounds) later Shar has helped the other escapees from the pool.

Ront and Angus continue to stand over Tak fighting Jorlan and another drow guard. Stool is

half way across the bridge.

Stool and Buppido splash into the pool. Shar helps Stool who bobs to the surface

but can’t swim. Ront beat the drow guard unconscious. Jorlan seeing the odds turning

against him disengages from the fight. Angus grabs the unconscious Tak and rushes towards

the waterfall.

Shar helps Stool and Buppido to shore. Ront rushes to the waterfall. Angus throws

Tak into the water and jumps in after him.

Shar sees Tak sink like a stone and dives in to rescue him. Angus swims to shore.

Ront hits the pool behind them.

Gathered soaking wet besides the pool they discuss which way to go. Eldeth wants to head

west towards her home, but does not know the way. Jimjar offers to guide them to his home

of Blingdenstone to the Northwest. Angus picks up Tak and they leave Velkynvelve behind

fearing the guards were already riding the lift down to recapture us.

Sarith suggests we split up so the guards have to split to follow us both. He takes

Buppido, Derendil, and Ront with him (he wants to take Stool, but it won’t leave Tak).

Topsy and Turvy vanish into the darkness without a farewell. That leaves Angus, Shar, Tak,

Eldeth, Jimjar, Shuushar, and Stool heading into the darkness with the feeble light of a

luminous moss lantern.

After walking until weary they rest. Taknafein wakes up and they fill him in on what

happened while he was unconscious. We hear faint sounds off in the distance, perhaps

pursuing guards or the other escapees. We gather up our things and move on through the

endless darkness.

Marching order; Jimjar, Shar, Angus, Shuushar carrying Stool, Eldeth, and Tak.
Watches (5 at two hours each); 1st Shar & Jimjar, 2nd Shar & Angus, 3rd Shuushar & Tak,

4th Stool & Tak, 5th Eldeth & Tak.

We spend another day traveling and rest again. The morning of the third day we are

surprised by a monster leaping out of the dark!
